In the past,
plantation owners in the Southern Colonies planted tobacco on the
same land year after year which depleted the soil of nutrients. This
made it necessary to continuously clear more land.
People settle in areas where there are
resources to use to meet basic needs.
Colonial
settlements were mainly along the coastal plain and many colonists
made their living by fishing, whaling, and shipbuilding and other
jobs supported by trade with England. People also earned a
living by trapping/hunting, farming, cutting lumber, making and
repairing barrels for shipping grain, dried fish, rice etc.
Trade centers and
mills built along rivers
Fertile lands
increased farming
Examples
that show how scarcity and choice govern economic decisions (e.g.,
Boston Tea Party and boycott).
